Today's Lesson
Introduction
To keep mental recall of times tables facts fresh, ask your student to access Hit the Buttonand select 10x tables, 5x tables and 2x tables.
ACCESS - Hit the Button (TopMarks)
Challenge your student to play each of these times tables twice through, aiming to beat their score on the second go.
Note that currency can be changed to suit your local currency, if desired.
Show a pen from a pretend shop.
Explain:
- This pen costs 45p. I’m going to pay with a 50p coin.
Show the 📄 0–50p penny line and ask your student to show you 45p on the line.
Explain:
- I’ve spent 45p (cross out the section from 0 to 45p). If I pay with 50p, I’ve given too much money, so to find out how much money I should get back (my change), I can count up from 45p to 50p.
Model counting the pennies: ‘1…2…3…4…5p - this is the amount of change I will get, five pence.’
Say:
- I can write this as a subtraction number sentence. What subtraction can I write?
Write: 50p – 45p = 5p.
Ask:
- If I had only spent 5p, how much change would I get?
Write: 50p – 5p = 45p (remind your student that 45p + 5p = 50p).
Repeat the activity with a sharpener costing 48p.
Explain:
- I could count back 48 from 50 to find how much money I would have left, but that would take a long time! Instead, I can use the difference between 48 and 50 to tell me how much I have left.
Repeat for 43p; this time asking your student to work out the change independently.
Ask your student for their answer and ask them to explain their strategy.
Watch this video to learn how to jump up from the price of the item to the 50p on a number/penny line.
Main Activity
Ask your student to choose items from the 📄 Finding Change from 50p sheet costing between 40p and 50p.
Use the 📄 0–50p penny line to help them to find the change from 50p.
They should record the related subtraction sentences.
Extra Challenge
Ask your student to choose any two items from the sheet.
Ask:
Which is the most expensive?
By how much?
Ask them to record the process in a subtraction sentence and to repeat for two further items.
Workbook
To help your student build upon their learning from today, please ask them to complete the activities on pages 18 and 19 of Abacus Workbook 2.
