Today's Lesson

Introduction

Before you start the lesson, watch this Recap Video with your student.

Main Activity

Together collect a range of toys and items from around the house to make a play ‘shop’. Use sticky notes to write some price tags together. The items should be priced at any 2-digit number from the 100 square. The price should be in pence so add a ‘p’ after each number. For example, a teddy may cost 34p.

Take it in turns to choose two items each to buy. Write down the number sentence needed to calculate how much money you will need.

For example, select a Teddy at 34p and a Train at 21p.

34p + 21p = ?

They should use any resources that have helped them this step, including the 100 square, Spider and the 0-100 Beaded line. to calculate the answer.

Can your student work-out which coins they should use to pay for their two items?

Continue for a few goes each.

Now tell your student that each item in the shop as been reduced by 10p.

Can they write the new price tags to use in the sale?

Which calculation would they need to write each time?

For example, the Teddy used to be 34p. How much does it cost in the sale?

34p-10p = 24p

Extra Support

You can begin by offering your student the chance to buy one item at a time.

Extra Challenge

You may wish to make some of the items cost more money using pounds instead of pence. This time, use the £ sign before the number on the price tag.

For example: A jumper costs £23
