Today's Lesson
Introduction
Take out your 📄 number cards 1-20 and ask your student if they can remember our work from the last lesson finding doubles and halves.
Present your student with a number card one at a timegiving lots of opportunities for your student to practise recalling doubles and halves within 20.
Continue to use counters and pictures if your student is struggling with halving numbers.
Main Activity
WATCH - Halving Small Numbers (YouTube).
This gives your student chance to see how halving is the same as dividing by 2. The video also emphasises the links between doubling and halving.
Apply
Finally, using your even 📄 number cards from your 1-20 set, support your student in choosing one card at a time, finding half of that number, and trying to write the number sentence using the division symbol as in the video above.
Extra Support
Continue to record halving without the division sign until your student is ready.
Extra Challenge
Ask your student to record all of the halving number sentences from 20 to 2 using the division sign.
