Today's Lesson
Introduction
Return to your student's completed problems from Lesson 3.
Show your student the 3 packets of 6 real buns. Tell them that there are 3 packets here and each packet has 6 buns inside. How many buns are there altogether?
Ask them to discuss this with you and to draw the array that shows 3 lots of 6 buns.
Write the number sentence 3 x 6 = 18. 
Now start with the number 18.
Ask:
- Can you think of another word problem that starts with 18 buns and involves grouping?
Challenge them to discuss possible ideas.
Ask:
- If there are 18 buns altogether and the baker puts them into packets of 6, how many packets will he need?
- What are we going to have to do to work out this problem?
Allow time for discussion.
Ask:
- How many groups of 6 are there in 18?
Show a 0-20 beaded lineand say, ‘Let’s draw hops of 6 and see how many there are until we reach 18.’
Label the hops as you go. There are 3, so there are three 6s in 18.
Record as 18 ÷ 6 = 3.

Main Activity
Show some party bags (or similar) and some things to put in the bags, such as rubbers, pencils or balloons. Put 2 balloons in each bag.
Ask:
- There are 2 balloons in each bag and there are 5 bags. How many balloons are there altogether?
Ask your student then to write 2 x 5 = 10.
Take out the balloons and place them in the middle of the table.
Ask:
- There are 10 balloons here. How many would go in each bag to be fair?
Ask your student to discuss this with you, encouraging them to see the relationship between the multiplication and the division.
Ask your student to write:
There are 5 groups of 2 in 10.
10 ÷ 2 = 5
Now show the 10 balloons again, but this time say that there are only 2 bags.
Ask:
- How many would be in each?
Again, stress the link between the multiplication numbers.
Repeat with different amounts of objects.
Finally, work through the 📄 Division word problemssheets with your student.
