Today's Lesson
What to Get Ready
Lay the 100 bead string out on the table. Slide the first 5 beads on the 100 bead string over to one side and cover with a cloth.
Introduction
Show your student the prepared 100 bead string.
Show them the next 5 beads that are next to the beads that are covered. Slide another 10 along.
Ask, βHow many now?β Answer: 15.
Slide another 10 along. Ask, βHow many now?β Answer: 25.
Keep sliding 10 beads across at a time and asking your student how many beads there are.
Repeat this process, adding the groups of 10 more quickly.
When you reach 95, count back in tens together until you reach 5.
Repeat, this time starting with 7 beads (have 3 beads hidden).
Repeat a final time, starting with 4 beads (have 6 beads hidden).
Watch this video to help demonstrate the above task using the bead string.
Main Activity
Show your student the π Count in 10s sheet and ask your student to choose a number between 0 and 10 and mark it on the beaded line.
They should then draw jumps of 10, labelling the jump: +10, and repeating until past 90. They label where each jump lands.
They should write the first jump as an addition under the line.
Repeat with a different number for each line. There is an example on the sheet to help you.
Extra Challenge
If your student is ready for an extra challenge, give them a printed sheet of 0-100 Beaded Number Lines.
Next, give your student two sets of cards: π 0-9 Number cards and Multiples of 10 cards.
Your student should then pick a card from each set. The single digit (for example, 5) is where they will start on the beaded line, and the second number will be the number of tens that they will need to add to that number (for example, 40).
Your student should then talk with you about how many jumps of 10 they will need to do (for example, 40 = 4 jumps).
Support them to write these on the beaded line and then to record the addition
Workbook
To help your student consolidate their learning from today, please ask them to complete the activities on page 28 of Abacus Workbook 1.
