Today's Lesson

Introduction

Give your student the small practice clock or teaching clock.

Say a time, for example, ‘Half past three.’ Your student then needs to show you the analogue time (on a clock) and the digital time (written down).

Repeat as you say another time, for example, ‘Quarter past eight.’

Each time, model making the times on the Tell the time clock.

ACCESS - Tell the Time Interactive Digital Clock (MathsFrame)

When your student is confidently showing ‘quarter past’ and ‘half past’ times, introduce some ‘quarter to’ times.

Finally, introduce some ‘5 past’, ‘10 past’ etc.

Reiterate equivalences between ‘quarter to’ and ‘45 past’ on the digital clock.

Main Activity

Your student can now complete the 📄 Digital and analogue times and intervals Sheet 1.

For each time written in words, your student should write the time in digital, draw clock hands, then write the time (digital) quarter of an hour and half an hour after it.

Extra Challenge

Your student should complete the 📄 Digital and analogue times and intervals Sheet 2.

For each time written in words, they should write the time in digital, draw clock hands, then write the time (digital) quarter of an hour and half an hour after it.

Workbook

To help your student consolidate their learning from today, please ask them to complete the activities on pages 36 and 37 of Abacus Workbook 3.
