Today's Lesson

Introduction

02 no hat.jpgUse the 100 bead string to support your student counting to 100, moving beads one at a time as you do so.

When you are counting, emphasis the multiples of 10 (10, 20, 30, and so on) and the numbers ending in 5 (5, 15, 20, and so on). You can emphasis these numbers by changing your voice as you say them.

Point to 20 and then to 30 beads.

Say, โ€˜Think of a number that is between 20 and 30 and show it to me on the bead string. Is your number closer to 20 or to 30?โ€™

Repeat, asking for numbers between 30 and 40, 40 and 50, 60 and 70, 90 and 100.

Write 26 and 51 on sticky notes.

Ask, โ€˜Which of these two numbers is bigger? Where are these numbers on the 100 bead string?โ€™

Show your student how to draw tags to label numbers after beads on the 0-100 Beaded line.

Then, show your student the 0-100 Landmarked line. Place your finger under the numbers, reading them out in turn.

Ask your student where 26 goes on this line. Which two multiples of 10 does it lie between? Ask where it is between 20 and 30 (just past halfway). Draw a tag to label its position.

Now consider 51.

Ask, โ€˜Is 51 closer to 50 or 60?โ€™ Say, โ€˜Try to imagine 10 beads in the space between 50 and 60, then hang a tag after the first bead.

Repeat this with other 2-digit numbers.

Watch this video which demonstrates working with the number line, counting in 10s, 5s, and how to find 2-digit numbers.

Main Activity

Show your student the ๐Ÿ“„ 0-100 Number Line Task 1.

Ask your student to roll two dice twice to make two 2-digit numbers.

For example, if you roll a 2 and a 6 your number would be 26.

Your student should then find and mark both numbers on a beaded line. They should then complete the boxes underneath.

For example: 54 is more than 26.

Repeat three more times until the sheet is complete.

Show your student the ๐Ÿ“„ 0-100 Number Line Task 2.

Ask your student to use two dice to make a 2-digit number, for example 56. They should then locate and write it on the beaded line and discuss with you which two multiples of 10 it lies between.

When you agree, they should write:

__ is between __ and __

Repeat three times until the sheet is complete.

Extra Challenge

Play as a pair โ€“ the aim is to get 50 points each!

Use aย  0-100 Landmarked Number line.

Player 1 writes a number on a sticky note without showing Player 2.

Player 1 marks the number carefully and accurately on the 0-100 Landmarked Number line.

Player 2 can ask three questions to identify the number.

For example, โ€˜Is it more than 72 and less than 75?โ€™ Or, โ€˜Is it an even number?โ€™

Player 1 can only answer โ€˜Yesโ€™ or โ€˜Noโ€™.

Both players score 10 points if Player 2 guesses correctly.

Play again!
