Today's Lesson
What to Get Ready
Either print out this table or draw one on a piece of paper.
Introduction
Show your student the 1-litre jug.
Indicate and say, ‘One litre comes to here. Half a litre comes to here.’
Mark these two capacities with a whiteboard pen to make that clear.
Show your student four different containers.
Ask, ‘Which of these containers do you think will hold more than half a litre?’
Check your student's suggestions using the 1-litre jug, filling each container with water and pouring it into the jug over a washing-up bowl.
Record the results in a similar table with the title ‘Results’.
Main Activity
Provide the collection of different-sized containers and ask your student to sort them into two groups:
- those which might hold more than ½ litre
- those which might hold less than a ½ litre.
Ask, ‘Are any containers that are difficult to decide on? Why? What could you do to help to decide?
Next, give a plastic beaker to your student, labelled ¼ litre, and a range of containers with capacities of more and less than ¼ litre. For example, an egg cup, a mug, a small yoghurt pot and a small juice bottle.
Ask your student to predict which container they think holds less than ¼ litre and which they think will hold more than ¼ litre.
They should fill each container in turn with coloured water and pour it into the plastic beaker to find out.
Challenge your student to order the containers’ capacities.
Ask some questions to probe comparison of capacity.
For example:
- How many egg cups are needed to fill a juice bottle?
- How many yoghurt pots are needed to fill a mug?
