Today's Lesson
Introduction
Show your student 7 beads at the start of the 100 bead string.
Ask, βHow many more do we need to make 10?β (Answer: 3)
Show 17 beads. Ask, βHow many more to make 20?β (Answer: 3)
Point out the pair to 10, the 7 and 3.
Then show 27 beads.
Ask, βWhat is the next multiple of 10 after 27? How many more to make 30?β
Encourage your student to look at the pair to 10 to help them work this out.
This video demonstrates using the beaded line to use knowledge of pairs to 10.
Repeat with 37, 47, 57β¦ 97.
Record the matching number sentences on a mini whiteboard.
For example: 47 + 3 = 50.
Ask your student to show 15 on the bead string. Ask, βWhatβs the next multiple of 10? What number sentence can we write?β
Repeat with 25, 35, 55, 75 and 95.
Repeat with 26, 46, 86 and 96.
Main Activity
Ask your student to roll two 1-10 dice to make a 2-digit number. If they roll 10, they roll again.
For example, if they roll a 3 and a 5, they can make 53 or 35.
Next, they make their chosen number on their bead string. Then they should look at the bead string to see what needs to be added to make the next multiple of 10.
They can then record the number sentence, for example: 53 + 7 = 60.
