Today's Lesson
What to Get Ready
If possible find some age birthday cards, including for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 9th and 21st birthdays.Β Alternatively, you could make cards by folding paper in half and writing on the front.
Introduction
Show your student the selection of birthday cards. Look at how the ordinal numbers are written differently, and that they do not all end with βthβ, but that a lot of them do.
Look at how β21stβ is written. Note that we don't have a card for someone who is 22 - you donβt usually get that on birthday cards. But how might it be written? And 23? Which person is the oldest? And the youngest?
Show two cards, for example, 6th and 9th and ask, βIf a person is older than 6 but younger than 9, what might be on their card?β
This video works through ordinal numbers as outlined above.
Main Activity
Ask your student to work out the secret messages from π Work out the secret meeting spot! by counting aloud along the letters of the sentence written on the sheet:
T h e y a r e r e a d i n g b o o k s
For example: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and so on, until they reach the 8th (the first letter needed). They should reach βrβ. Write this down in the first space. Continue until they have found all the letters needed.
If they work them out and they make sense, they can create their own secret message for you to decipher.
Extra Challenge
Ask your student to complete π Who will be at the secret meeting?
Workbook
To help your student to consolidate their learning from today, please ask them to complete the activities on pages 32 and 33 of Abacus Workbook 1.
