Today's Lesson

What to Get Ready

Access Strike it out game on YouTube so that you are familiar with the task before the lesson. Print out the 📄 Strike it out poster.

Introduction

Before you start the lesson, watch this Recap Video with your student.

Explain that today you will be playing a game which needs them to think about their addition and subtraction pairs to 20.

Show your student the Strike it out gameon You Tube**.** Share the instructions from the**📄 Strike it out Poster.**

Explain that you will expect your student to do as much talking about the game as they can whilst they play.

Tell them that you will ask them, ‘Why…?’ and, ‘How do you know…?’ regularly throughout the game.

Main Activity

Ask your student to play the game with you and/or with another player.

It is very important that you regularly ask your student, ‘How do you know…?’ when they make a decision or give an answer. Model this process so that you are giving them your reasons for your answers, too.

If your student finds reading tricky, you can read them the questions.

If your student is unsure of an answer, talk with them about their ideas.  You can also look back at previous lessons together.*
