Today's Lesson

What to Get Ready

Ask friends/peers to be ready to take part in a survey about their favourite chocolates! You will need up to about 20 people.

Main Activity

Tell your student that they are now going to conduct a survey to find out everyoneโ€™s favourite shaped chocolates. Show them the ๐Ÿ“„ Chocolates images. Have a brief recap of shape by asking, โ€˜If you drew around this chocolate, what shape would you make? And this one?โ€™

Then look at the ๐Ÿ“„ Blank tally chart together.

Help your student to survey friends/peers to create a tally chart record of their favourite chocolate.

Once done, ask: โ€˜What headings will we need to create a pictogram for the data? What picture could you use to represent a person?โ€™

Your student should then draw their own pictogram, and write two sentences about what they have found (their results).

Watch this video which looks at some examples of pictograms, and also models how to transfer information from a tally chart to a pictogram.

Discussion points:

Was there one particular chocolate that a lot of people chose?

Was it hard to fit the number of pictures on the page for any of the chocolates?

If so, suggest and show how the number of pictures could be reduced by having each symbol represent 2 people.

If we did this, what would we do if there were 7 people who chose one chocolate, as 7 isnโ€™t a multiple of 2?

Workbook

To help your student consolidate their learning from today, please ask them to complete the activities on page 50 of Abacus Workbook 2.
