Today's Lesson

Introduction

Ask your student to close their eyes.

Say: ‘Imagine two squares sitting right next to one another with one of each of their sides touching the other. What shape do they make?’

Ask them to draw it on a whiteboard:

Say: ‘Now add another square. Explain that they can add it on any side, but it must line up with one of the existing squares.

Now look at their shape and discuss what they have drawn.

Ask: ‘What shape is it?’

Encourage them to count the sides to work it out.

Possible shapes are shown below. Ask them to try adding the square in a different way to make the shape they have not yet drawn.

Ask them now to add another square. Then they should discuss their drawing with you.

Now they might include larger squares, longer rectangles, hexagons and octagons.

Next, pick a square and a triangle from the range of plastic shapes. Slide them together to form a ‘house shape’ and ask how many sides and corners this shape has.

Ask: ‘So what is this new shape?’

Explain: ‘We’re going to add another square. What might the new shape look like?’

Draw it and discuss ideas.

Main Activity

Your student should put 2 or 3 squares, rectangles and triangles together to make new shapes, draw round them and write their names at the side, or the numbers of sides if it is not a shape known to them.

Ask them to discuss the properties of the shapes they have drawn.

They should then count the number of right angles, and also decide if the shape is symmetrical or not.

Workbook

To help your student recap upon previous learning from this course, please ask them to complete the activities on page 3 of Abacus Workbook 1.

Assignment

At the end of this lesson, please submit the completed Assignment 6 to your student's Wolsey Hall tutor. (This was completed during Step 18 Lesson 4.)
