PLAY - Flash Card Time Challenge - Phase 2 (Phonics Play)

Phonics - New Learning

Introduce the new sound: ‘ee’

Show your student the flashcard ‘ee’ and tell them it makes the sound ‘ee’ as in ‘bee’.

Phonics - Blend to Read

see (2) | bee (2) | tree (3) | keen (3)

Phonics - Split to Spell

seed (3) | feel (3) | feet (3) | heel (3)

Phonics - Extra Support

Blending to read: ask your student to say the sounds slowly and allow them to blend together. Then they can say them faster until they can hear the word.

Splitting to spell: on the whiteboard, give your student only the sounds they need to write the word. This means they just need to order them and write them into the Sound Beds.

Reading & Writing - What to Get Ready

Your student will be learning how to retell the story of The Little Red Hen.

Watch the video of Pie Corbett retelling the story.

Reading & Writing - Introduction

Explain to your student that they are going to be learning a story. They are going to learn to tell this story on their own without needing a book! They will be practising telling the story for a short time every day.

Read the story to your student from the 📊 The Little Red Hen PowerPoint.

Ask them if there are any words they do not understand. If there are, spend time now explaining what they mean.

Reading & Writing - Writing

Ask your student what they like and dislike about the story. Ask them to write their likes and dislikes in a list on the 📄 Likes and Dislikes Grid.

Reading & Writing - Speaking and Listening

Show your student the video of the Year 1 class retelling The Little Red Hen. Talk about how the children have added actions to the story to help them remember the different parts.

Retell the story again from 📊 The Little Red Hen PowerPoint. Ask your student to join in with any parts they can remember.

Reading & Writing - What to Notice

While they are doing this activity, remember to praise your student for the skills they are using.

For example:

‘I can see you are using your big voice!’

‘Well done for remembering the next line of the story.’

‘I have noticed you are using the pictures for clues.’

Reading & Writing - Handwriting and Spelling

Ask your student to show you their best tall letters (‘b’, ‘d’, ‘h’, ‘k’, ‘l’, ‘t’, and ‘f’) on a spare piece of paper. Save this piece of paper to compare with at the end of the lesson.

Draw lines on a blank piece of paper.

As an extra challenge, they could then write words using these letters.

For example: ‘bed’, ‘had’, ‘bid’, ‘den’, ‘bin’ and ‘hid’.

Check they are forming these tall letters correctly.
