Today's Lesson
What to Get Ready
Make sure you have access to your student's library of familiar books.
Write the words from 'Blend to Read' (below) on 📄 blank flashcards.
Print out the 📄 Persuasive Words document and cut out the words.
Phonics - Quick Fire!
Quick recognition of sounds.
Phonics - New Learning
Tell your student that they will be learning ways of writing the sound ‘er’ (as in ‘herb’).
Show your student the 📄 flashcard ‘or’ and teach them that it makes the sound ‘er’ as in ‘worm’. Tell your student that this sound is usually found after the letter ‘w’.
Phonics - Blend to Read
worm (3) | worst (4) | world (4) | working (5)
Phonics - Split to Spell
work (3) | worth (3) | word (3) | worms (4)
Phonics - Extra Support
Show your student how to blend to read/split to spell the first word in each activity.
Phonics - Extra Challenge
worldly (6) | worthy (4) | earthworm (6)
Challenge your student to write the words without Sound Beds to help them.
Phonics - Apply
Write this caption on the mini whiteboard: the world’s worst earthworm. Then ask your student to read the caption.
If your student finds caption reading easy, rather than you writing the caption, you can say the caption and they can write it on the whiteboard.
Reading & Writing - Introduction
Spend some time today looking at your student's library of familiar books.
Talk about which of these your student now finds easy to read and which are still challenging.
Talk about which of the books your student enjoys the most and why.
Tell your student which of the books you enjoy hearing them read the most and why.
Look at your student's writing from Step 18 Lesson 2 together.
Ask your student to read their writing to you. Explain that they are going to be planning a TV advert for their favourite fruit! Their advert will try and persuade people to eat more of that fruit.
Ask: ‘What is your favourite TV advert? Why do you like it?’
Watch the following adverts:
(You may also search online for your student's favourite advert that they mentioned earlier.)
Ask: ‘Which advert do you like the most? Why?’
Reading & Writing - Main Activity
Say to your student that these adverts are trying to persuade people to buy things. Explain that persuade means to try and get somebody to do what you want. You might like to share some examples of how your student tries to persuade you to do things, for example, staying up later, having more screen time or buying them snacks!
Share the 📄 persuasive words with your student. Read them together and check that your student understands what they mean.
Put all the words in a pile, face down.
Take turns with your student to turn over a word and to put the word into a sentence. Explain that you get a bonus point if the sentence is about your student's favourite fruit.
For example:
‘I think mangoes are the most delicious fruit.’
‘Everybody needs to eat mangoes.’
‘Mango is the best fruit ever.’
‘Mangoes are definitely sweet.’
Support your student as much as they need during this activity.
Reading & Writing - What to Notice
While they are doing this activity, remember to praise your student for the skills they are using.
For example:
‘What an interesting idea!’
‘What a persuasive sentence!’
‘That sentence would definitely make me want to eat that fruit!’
Reading & Writing - Handwriting and Spelling
Ask your student to spell the words they have been practising this step. If your student has already remembered how to spell any of these words, choose an extra word from their 📄 High Frequency Word List. Do not start learning any more than eight during this step.
Continue to practise these spellings choosing an activity from the 📄 Weekly Spelling Activities. Remember that it is a good idea to choose a different activity each day.
