Today's Lesson
What to Get Ready
Today your student will choose their favourite out of all the poems they have written. They will then practise reading this poem aloud.
At the end of the lesson, you will film your student reading aloud, and this recording can then be sent a family member or friend. You may like to let your student choose who they would like to send the recording to.
Introduction
Spread out your student's poetry writing in front of them.
Ask:
‘Which poem is your favourite? Why?’
‘Which did you find the trickiest to write? Why?’
‘Which did you find easier to write? Why?’
‘Out of all of the poems, which sentence are you most proud of?’
Speaking and Listening
Explain to your student that they are going to practise reading their favourite poem first, and that at the end of the lesson, you will record them reading this poem. You might like to ask your student who they would like to send this recording to, or you might choose just to tell them.
Ask your student to read the whole poem through.
If your student is finding any sentences tricky, say the sentence out loud for them to repeat until they are saying the sentence more smoothly.
Then film your student reading their poem and watch the video back through together. Ask, ‘Is there anything you think you could do better?’
Allow your student more time to practise reading their poem if they would like to have another go.
Then film your student reading their poem again. When they are happy with the recording, send it to the chosen family member or friend.
What to Notice
While they are doing this activity, remember to praise your student for the skills they are using.
For example:
‘Well done for remembering to take a breath at the full stop.’
‘You are sounding like a storyteller!’
Handwriting and Spelling
This step you will have chosen to either continue to practise individual letter shapes or work on 📄 Pre-Joining Patterns.
