Phonics - Extra Support
Blending to read: if your student needs extra support with blending to read a word, ask them to say the sounds slowly. Then they can say them faster until they can hear the word.
Splitting to spell: on the whiteboard, give your student only the sounds they need to write the word. This means they just need to order them and write them into the Sound Beds.
Phonics - Extra Challenge
blush (4) | slushy (5) | attack (4) | stuffy (5)
Reading & Writing - Introduction
Open up Big Cat Books: Ben and Bobo. Take a look at the front cover together. Talk together about what this story might be about.
Reading & Writing - New Learning
‘Take a Peek’ at Ben and Bobo from Big Cat Books.See Video 6: Taking a Peek.
Some key things to draw your student’s attention to:
- The words ‘wallop’ and ‘splat’ on page 4–5. Can your student read these words?
- Ask, ‘What does wallop mean? What does splat mean?’
- Say, ‘Ben says, mind the lid.’ ‘Bobo says, What lid? Run your finger beneath the words and say, ‘mind the lid’ and then ‘what lid?’ Then ask your student to do the same. Say, ‘Can you make it sound like a real storyteller is reading?’ Encourage your student to read the words together as a short phrase.
- Look for other short phrases to read ‘like a storyteller’. For example, page 12: ‘looked at the'; page 23: ‘good at painting.’ Practise saying the words in fluent phrases.
Reading & Writing - Read
Support your student as they read Ben and Bobo. Remind them to read words to the end, to make sure the story makes sense and to try to make it sound like a real storyteller is reading. Praise your student when you see them read the phrases as you practised.
Reading & Writing - Extra Support
f your student is reading each word individually without reading in phrases, repeat a group of words to them once they have read it, making the reading sound fluent. This is demonstrated in Video 7: Reading in Phrases.
Reading & Writing - Extra Challenge
Tell your student that storytellers do not say the sounds in a word aloud before they blend it. Ask, ‘Can you blend the sounds in your head and then say the word out loud?’
Reading & Writing - What to Notice
Notice whether your student reads the phrases you practised with fluency. Do they read any other phrases like this?
Are they still saying the individual sounds in a word aloud before they blend it? If so, write three individual words from the book (for example, frog, tummy, licks) onto the whiteboard and ask your student to try to blend them in their head before they say the words aloud.
