Today's Lesson
Introduction
Watch this step's introductory video with your student.
What to Get Ready
Print 📄 Sound Flashcards 3 and trim these ready to use for the next few step’s lessons.
Write the words from 'Blend to Read' (below) on 📄 blank flashcards.
During this poetry unit, your student will be learning to read, remember and recite poems. Because they will not be reading books and eBooks as usual, it will be helpful for you and your student to spend up to ten minutes a day reading books from their library of familiar books. You may also want to refer to the recommended additional 📄 Reading List or ask your Wolsey Hall tutor for other titles that would be suitable for your student.
Before the lesson, print out the 📄 Poetry Pack ready to use throughout this step. Look at the poem‘The Apple and the Worm’ from the poetry pack. Be prepared to read it aloud to your student today.
Phonics - Quick Fire!
Quick recognition of sounds.
Phonics - New Learning
Today’s new grapheme is ‘th’ as in ‘this’. It is similar to the other phoneme for ‘th’ as in ‘thin’, but it is voiced rather than whispered.
It may be helpful to watch Video 1: Sound Cards and Actions again.
Phonics - Blend to Read
that (3) | this (3) | with (3) | them (3)
Phonics - Split to Spell
then (3) | than (3) | this (3) | them (3)
Phonics - Extra Support
If your student needs extra support with telling the difference between the two different sounds for ‘th’, try getting them to listen to you making each of the sounds in turn with their eyes closed.
For ‘th’ as in ‘this’, they will be able to hear your voice; for ‘th’ as in ‘thin’, it will sound as if you are whispering.
Phonics - Extra Challenge
smooth (4) | smoothing (6) | smoothly (6)
Phonics - Apply
Write this caption on the mini whiteboard: the man went with them. Then ask your student to read the caption.
If your student finds caption reading easy, rather than you writing the caption, you can say the caption and they can write it on the whiteboard.
Reading & Writing - New Learning
Tell your student that you will be reading poems in their next few lessons.
Explain that poems often tell stories but are usually shorter and are often written to be performed. Tell your student that they will be learning how to read and perform poems.
Reading & Writing - Main Activity
Read the poem ‘Apple and the Worm’ to your student. Once they have listened to it once, tell them you are going to read it again. Ask them to think about any bits of the poem that they like or dislike and be ready to tell you about them.
Ask your student:
- What did you like about the poem?
- What didn’t you like about the poem?
- What do you think the poem is about?
- Are there any words that you found interesting?
- How did the poem make you feel?
- Why do you think the poet wrote the word, ‘PLOP’ in capital letters?
- What does it mean at the end about swallowing a bird?
Reading & Writing - Extra Support
If your student is in need of extra support, suggest some answers to the questions to help them get started.
Reading & Writing - Extra Challenge
If your student is in need of**extra challenge,**they can try to read the poem by themselves.
Reading & Writing - Handwriting and Spelling
Explain to your student that they are going to continue learning words from the 📄 High Frequency Word List. In Step 1 you tested your student on all the words from the list so you would know the words they could not yet spell. Then they continued to learn unknown words.
Choose three words that your student cannot yet spell. Explain to your student that they are going to practise these words during this step.
Look at the 📄 Weekly Spelling Activities. Choose one activity and use this to help your student practise their spellings today.
