Today's Lesson
What to Get Ready
Log in to Big Cat Books.
Write the words from 'Blend to Read' (below) on 📄 blank flashcards.
Phonics - Quick Fire!
Quick recognition of sounds.
Phonics - New Learning
Write the letter ‘a’ on the mini whiteboard. Ask your student the sounds they know that this letter makes (‘a’ as in ‘ant’, ‘o’ as in ‘watch’ and ‘ay’ as in ‘angel’).
Tell your student that in today’s lesson they will Blend to Read and Split to Spell words in which ‘a’ makes the sound ‘ay’.
Phonics - Blend to Read
angel (5) | April (5) | stable (5) | lazy (4)
Phonics - Split to Spell
crazy (5) | table (4) | change (4) | baby (4)
Phonics - Extra Support
Show your student how to blend to read/split to spell the first word in each activity.
Phonics - Extra Challenge
Challenge your student to write the words without Sound Beds to help them.
Phonics - Apply
Write this caption on the mini whiteboard: in April, the baby horse lays in the stable. Then ask your student to read the caption.
Reading - Introduction
Read yesterday’s choice from Big Cat Books. Ask your student to read ‘like a storyteller’, making the reading sound smooth and interesting. Tell them to read at a good pace, not too fast and not too slow.
Now choose a new book from Big Cat Books to read together.
Reading - Storytelling
Re-watch The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig.
Ask:
- Can you read out the story map for this story? (That is, can they tell you what happened briefly?)
Reading - Main Activity
Remind your student of their story mapping work from yesterday. Talk about what they drew (the main character) and the conversation you both had about their version and what they were going to map out.
Remind them that events lead from one to another and give them time to finish their story map.
When they have finished the drawing, remind them of 📄 Story Words. Ask them to choose words or sentence-starters from 📄 Story Words to write at different parts of their map. Explain that these will be words they can include in their sentences when they use the map to help them write their story.
Then, go through the map together, making sure that the story makes sense. It needs to follow the structure of the original version (to have three houses that fall down or are blown down).
Reading - What to Notice
While they are doing this activity, remember to praise your student for the skills they are using.
For example:
‘You have chosen your story words well. Using them will make your sentences really interesting to read.’
‘Your story map is going to be really interesting and fun to use for your story.’
Handwriting and Spelling
This step, please can you:
- Encourage your student to read through their writing to make sure they have spelt words correctly and that they are using their best handwriting.
Words they need to look out for are:
can, had, back, and, get, big, him, his, go
- Ask them to write a sentence with one of these words in it.
- Ask them to look for these words in one of their reading or bedtime books.
