Phonics - New Learning
Today’s new grapheme is ‘or’ as in ‘for’.
Show your student the 📄 flashcard and teach them the sound.
Phonics - Blend to Read

Phonics - Extra Support
Give your student only the graphemes they need to spell the word. If they find this easy, give them the graphemes they need plus one or two more to choose from.
Encourage your student to count the sounds they can hear so that they don’t miss any out when writing the word.

Challenge your student to write the words without Sound Beds to help them.
Phonics - Apply
Write this caption on the mini whiteboard: she played the horn on top of the fort. Then ask your student to read the caption.
If your student finds caption reading easy, rather than you writing the caption, you can say the caption and they can write it on the whiteboard.
Reading & Writing - Introduction
Tell your student that a good reader, like a storyteller, pays close attention to the punctuation.
Read Big Cat Books: All in a Month.
Show your student page 2 of All in a Month. Say, ‘This page has one sentence on it. It begins with a capital letter (point) and it ends with a full stop (point). We read the words all at once until we stop at the full stop, like this…’
Then read the sentence I moved house a month ago. Make sure the words flow together so your student can hear how their own reading should sound.
Now show your student page 4. Ask them to read the sentence to you. Praise them for making the words flow together and for stopping at the full stop.

Support your student as they read All in a Month*.* Encourage them to pay attention to the full stops.
Reading & Writing - Extra Support
If your student needs extra support to make the reading flow, write a short sentence from the text onto your whiteboard or paper and practise saying it quickly.
Reading & Writing - Extra Challenge
Ask your student to make the reading sound as exciting as they can by using their voice in a surprising way when they read the words ‘monster’, ‘dinosaur’ and ‘giant’.
Reading & Writing - What to Notice
Is your student pausing at the end of each sentence before beginning the text on the next page? Remind them to stop briefly when they see the full stops or question marks. Tell them that these can be good places to take a breath.
Reading & Writing - New Learning
Explain to your student that today they are going to start looking at types of words. The first word type we are going to look at is nouns.
Say the word ‘noun’ to your student and ask them to repeat it back. Repeat this until your student can say the word confidently.
Explain that nouns are naming words. Any word that names something is a noun. We use nouns a lot in our writing and when we talk. Most sentences will contain a noun.
Start saying examples of nouns to your student. For example, Monday, egg, table, February, water, Germany, town, cloud, song, Dad, cat. Ask your student if they can think of any more examples.
Tell them that to help them recognise nouns you can ask:
Is it a person? Is it a place? Is it a thing?
Reading & Writing - Main Activity
Go back to the beginning of All in a Month and tell your student that you are going to go on a noun hunt together. Re-read the book together and notice when you read a noun.
Some examples could include:
Page 2: house.
Page 4: birthday
Page 6: bike
Page 10: school
Repeat the process with the other sentences in the book. Whenever you find a noun, ask your student to write it on a piece of paper (they will need this list in future lessons).
Reading & Writing - Handwriting and Spelling
Explain that this step your student will be practising their handwriting by writing the days of the week.
Today they will practise writing the days Monday and Tuesday. Remind your student that these are nouns and they are a type of noun that has a capital letter at the start.
Ask your student to write Monday on the mini whiteboard (you could call out the letters for them). Ask them to decide which letters they have formed the best. Ask them to choose one letter to practise.
Ask them: ‘Are you starting the letter in the right place? Is your letter the right size? Do any parts of the letter need to be bigger or smaller?’
Repeat with the word Tuesday.
