Phonics - Apply
Write this caption on the mini whiteboard: the shark has a scar from the attack. Then ask your student to read the caption.
If your student finds caption reading easy, rather than you writing the caption, you can say the caption and they can write it on the whiteboard.
Phonics - What to Notice
If your student has been reading the captions in the Applyactivity up to this point, can they attempt to write the captions instead?
Phonics Play
PLAY - Flash Card Time Challenge - Phase 2 & 3 (Phonics Play)
Select 'Start'. Select 'Phases 2 & 3'. Select a 1 minute or 2 minute challenge.
Reading & Writing - Introduction
Look at your highlighted copy of the poem 📄 Down Behind the Dustbin. Ask your student to find the words which rhyme.
Choose one the rhyming pairs, for example, ‘Sid’ / ‘lid’.
Ask your student to write these words on the mini whiteboard.
Together, think of other words which rhyme with them. For example, ‘hid’, ‘kid’, ‘skid’, ‘bid’, ‘did’. Write these on the whiteboard too.
Ask your student: ‘What is the same about all of these words?’
Help them to notice that they all end with the same two letters.
Reading & Writing - Main Activity
Ask your student to choose a different rhyming pair from the poem, for example, ‘Jim’ / ‘him’. Ask them to write them on the whiteboard and then to write any other rhyming words they can think of, for example, ‘Kim’, ‘Tim’, ‘dim’.
Repeat this activity with the other rhyming pairs from the poem.
Reading & Writing - Extra Support
If your student needs extra support help them to find the rhyming pairs by emphasising these words when reading aloud.
Reading & Writing - Extra Challenge
Encourage your student to learn whole lines or phrases from the poem and to recite these with actions. Ask them to find the rhyming words by themselves when reading aloud.
Reading & Writing - Handwriting and Spelling
Ask your student to practise writing capital letters ‘P’, ‘Q’, ‘R’, ‘S’ and ‘T’ on lined paper.
If they are finding any of these letters tricky, they could practise further on a mini whiteboard.
As an extra challenge, they could then write the capital letters at the start of different names. For example, ‘Paulo’, ‘Queenie’, ‘Santi’ and ‘Tim’.
