Assignment

This lesson works towards Assignment 6.

Please access the assignment for details about what you will need to submit to your student's Wolsey Hall tutor.

What to Get Ready

Today, your child will read from the Big Cat Books – Meg Slug and Big Dash.

Have your Video Recording Device ready to record your student reading.

Read

Tell your child that today they will be reading a book called Mega Slug and Big Dash.

Say, ‘In this story we are going to read about Mega Slug, who is the boss of the allotment and Big Dash, who is the pest.’

If your child does not know what an allotment is, show them a picture from the book and briefly talk about allotment. Look through the book together briefly.

Video your child as they read Mega Slug and Big Dash.

Begin by reading up until ‘Big Dash can crunch carrots. He can munch pumpkins' to your child, then ask your child to continue reading from ‘ He can chomp this mega-radish as well……’

If your child reaches a word that they don’t know, allow them a brief time to try and read it themselves. If they continue to need help, say the word for them.

When your child has finished reading, ask:

What was one of the bad plans that Mega Slug had to rid the allotment of Big Dash?

What do you think the word quit means in this story?

What did the Mega Slug do to get rid of Big Dash? What plan could you suggest for Mega Slug to get rid of Big Dash?

Which food would you grow to eat on an allotment? Can you tell me why?

This video will be submitted for Assignment 6.
