Today's Lesson

What to Get Ready

During this course, you will be accessing Phonics Play. You will need to log in to Phonics Play. The login details can be found here.

Prepare your whiteboard for 'Word Bingo' (this was shown in Video 2: Phonics Games).

Write each of the following words on a different 📄 Blank Flashcard: run, ran, it, rid, mat, sit, tin, mat, dot, got, rot, sun.

Check that you know the actions for the following sounds: s, u and r (it may help to have the 📄 Sound Actions next to you).

Phonics - Quick Fire

On a blank piece of paper, play the game 'Letter Match' with your student (shown in Video 2: Phonics Games). Use the following letters: O, o, P, p, V, v, E, e.

Phonics - New Learning

Lay the 📄 flashcards s, u and r out in front of your student. Ask them to point to one they know and tell you the sound it makes. Repeat the sound and demonstrate the matching action, asking your student to join in with you. Complete for each of the cards.

Now turn the flashcards face-down and play 'Flip Over' and/or 'Slow Reveal' (shown in Video 2: Phonics Games). Include the flashcards for all sounds taught so far.

Phonics - Blend to Read

Remind your student how we blend to read a word:

Say the sounds.

Blend the sounds.

Read the word.

Support your student as they blend to read the following words from the prepared flashcards: run, ran, it, rid, mat, sit, tin, mat, dot, got, rot, sun.

Play 'Word Bingo' (shown in Video 2: Phonics Games).

Phonics Play

Log in to Phonics Play. Open the game 'Buried Treasure - Phase 2'.

PLAY - Buried Treasure - Phase 2 (Phonics Play)

Select Phase 2. Then, select 'Revise all Phase 2'

Phonics - Extra Support

As you read each word, ask your student, ‘What sound can you hear first?’ and, ‘What sound can you hear after that?’ and, ‘How could we write that?’.

Phonics - Extra Challenge

Allow your student to choose words that have four phonemes for the Bingo game, for example, ‘cats’, ‘digs’, ‘rots’.

Handwriting and Spelling

During this part of the lesson, you will test your student's spelling of all the 📄 High Frequency Words they aim to learn during Year 1. Read out the first 20 words for your student to spell. Circle the words on the list that they can already spell on their own. This will let you know which spellings your student needs to work on in the coming lessons.

Keep this sheet as you will need it later in the unit of work. When Assignment 4 is due, you will test your student again on the list of words and see how many new they can now spell.
