Today's Lesson
What to Get Ready
Write the words from 'Blend to Read' (below) on 📄 blank flashcards.
Make sure you have access to the books in your student's library of familiar books for them to choose from today. Also have the storyboard you began in Step 4 Lesson 4 ready to continue working on.
Phonics - Quick Fire
Quick recognition of sounds.
Phonics - New Learning
Today’s new sound is ‘e’ as in ‘me’.
Show your student the flashcard and teach them the sound.
Phonics - Blend to Read
he (2) | she (2) | be (2)
Phonics - Split to Spell
me (2) | we (2) | she (2) | he (2)
Phonics - Extra Support
Blending to read: ask your student to say the sounds slowly and allow them to blend together. Then they can say them faster until they can hear the word.
Splitting to spell: on the whiteboard, give your student only the sounds they need to write the word. This means they just need to order them and write them into the Sound Beds.
Phonics - Extra Challenge
Ask your student to write rather than read today’s caption (below). They will need to think carefully about which ‘ee’ grapheme to use.
Phonics - Apply
Write this caption on the mini whiteboard: she will see me. Then ask your student to read the caption.
If your student finds caption reading easy, rather than you writing the caption, you can say the caption and they can write it on the whiteboard.
Phonics Play
Log in to Phonics Play.
Press 'Start'. Select 'Phase 2'. Ask your student to play 'Space Race'.

Reading & Writing - Speaking and Listening
Retell the story of The Little Red Hentogether (using the actions) without looking at the written down story. Use your student's story map to help you.
Your student will hopefully now be more confident when retelling this story. If there are parts of the story that they find tricky to remember, repeat these at other times of the day.
Reading & Writing - Main Activity
Give your student time to complete their storyboard.
Tell your student that they will be reading their story to you as if they are a real storyteller. Ask them to think about the following:
- speaking like the characters
- making the reading sound interesting and exciting
- not having gaps between words.
Ask your student to listen to you reading their storyboard aloud. You will need to read some parts well - at a good pace and with an interesting use of your voice – and some parts badly. Ask your student to listen carefully.
Can they:
- Give you a ‘thumbs up’ when the reading sounds good?
- Give you a ‘thumbs down’ when the reading doesn’t sound good?
Ask your student to explain why they have given you thumbs up or thumbs down at any point during the reading.
Ask your student to practise reading their story aloud once or twice. Then make a recording of your student reading their story.
Keep this recording to listen back to in future lessons.
Reading & Writing - Extra Support
If your student needs extra support to make the reading sound fluent, show them how to do it and ask if they can make their reading sound even better.
You can also show them how to read badly - for example, with long gaps between words – and ask them to tell you how it could be improved.
Reading & Writing - What to Notice
Praise your student for the following:
- reading words quickly and without long pauses between them
- using their voice in interesting, expressive ways.
Reading & Writing - Handwriting and Spelling
Choose three more words to practise from their 📄 High Frequency Word List. Do not start learning any more than six during this step.
Continue to practise these spellings, choosing an activity chosen from the 📄 Weekly Spelling Activities.
Remember that it is a good idea to choose a different activity each day.
