Today's Lesson

Phonics

Over the next three steps, your phonics activities will be personalised revision activities for your student.

All the instructions are included on the 📄 Daily Phonics Activities sheet.

Reading - Main Activity

Ask your student to use the ideas that they generated in Lesson 4 to create an oral poem.

Explain that an oral poem is a poem that is spoken only. It is not written down.

Explain that the challenge is to learn the poem off by heart as they invent it.

There are no rules to the poem. Your student might like to think about the nature poems they have read, and also to think back to the outdoor session in Lesson 4.

Give them time to think of ideas, and to then start inventing, rehearsing and performing (even if this performance is just for you).

Support and encourage them as they work but try not to give too much help with ideas!

When they are ready, encourage your student to perform their poem. You could also make a video so that they can watch themselves back.

Reading - Extra Challenge

Encourage your student to work independently on this activity.

Reading - What to Notice

While they are doing this activity, remember to praise your student for the skills they are using.

For example:

‘You are reading aloud so clearly!’

‘You are selecting some great actions!’

Handwriting and Spelling

Children’s handwriting develops at different times. Have a close look at your student's recent writing. Are there letter shapes that they still need to work on? If there are, please continue to choose one or two letters a day this step to focus on.

You may find your student needs to practise letters shapes they find tricky many times before they feel confident. Remember to use the 📄 Letter Formation Ideas resource.

Please revisit any spellings from Year 1 which you feel your student may need to practise more. These could be words that you see them misspelling still in their independent writing.
