Today's Lesson

Assignment

This lesson works towards Assignment 2.

Please access the Assignment for details about what you will need to submit to your student's Wolsey Hall tutor.

What to Get Ready

Before the lesson, log in to Big Cat Books, Band Red A, and have A Day Out open to read in today’s lesson.

Read A Day Out*.*

Write the words from 'Blend to Read' (below) on 📄 blank flashcards.

Phonics - Quick Fire!

Quick recognition of sounds.

Make sure you are now spending more time on newer sounds and those that your student does not know well.

Phonics - Blend to Read

Tell your student that they will be reading and spelling words with ‘ee’ phonemes in.

lead (3) | meal (3) | steep (4) | creep (4)

Phonics - Split to Spell

Your student may need extra support choosing between ‘ee’ and ‘ea’ in today’s activity. You can tell your student which of these to use if they need help.

steep (4) | creep (4) | speak (4) | bead (3)

Phonics - Extra Support

Blending to read: ask your student to say the sounds slowly and allow them to blend together. Then they can say them faster until they can hear the word.

Splitting to spell: on the whiteboard, give your student only the sounds they need to write the word. This means they just need to order them and write them into the Sound Beds.

Make sure you only give them one ‘ee’ sound to use.

For example, ‘sleep’: ‘p’, ‘ee’, ‘t’, ‘s’, ‘a’, ‘l’.

Phonics - Extra Challenge

speedy (5) | bleat (4) | treaty (5)

Phonics - Apply

Write this caption on the mini whiteboard: we can see a green leaf. Then ask your student to read the caption.

If your student finds caption reading easy, rather than you writing the caption, you can say the caption and they can write it on the whiteboard.

Phonics Play

Log in to Phonics Play

PLAY - Buried Treasure - Phase 3 (Phonics Play)

Select 'Start'. Select 'Phase 3'. Select 'Revise all Phase 3'. Ask your student to play 'Buried Treasure'.

Reading & Writing - Introduction

Read: A Day Out from Big Cat Books.

Ask your student to read the book to you, using their best storytelling voice.

Reading & Writing - New Learning

Explain that your student will be writing instructions to explain how you brush your teeth.

Take them to where they usually brush their teeth.

Share the 📄 I****nstructions Planning Sheet with them. Point to the ‘What you Need’ section at the top.

Ask your student to complete this section with everything you need to brush your teeth.

For example: toothbrush, water, toothpaste, mirror.

Your student will be continuing with completing the instruction sheet in subsequent lessons.

Reading & Writing - Handwriting and Spelling

Ask your student to practise writing descender letters ‘p’ and ‘j’.

As an extra challenge they could then write some words using those letters.

For example: ‘nap’, ‘pip’, ‘jab’ and ‘jam’. Check that they are forming the descender letter correctly.
