Today's Lesson
What to Get Ready
Make sure you have access to your student's library of familiar books and are logged in to Big Cat Books.
Select six words from the 📄 Word Bank and write these onto 📄 blank flashcards.
Print the 📄 Word Group Flashcards, trim the flashcards and have those needed for today’s lesson ready to use (see New Learning).
Print out the 📄 Word Group Sentences Step 35.
Phonics - Quick Fire!
Quick reading of words from **📄 Word Bank**written on flashcards.
Quick reading of a selection of the Word Groupwords learnt so far.
Phonics - New Learning
Write the letters ‘al’ on the mini whiteboard. Tell your student that in a few words the letters ‘al’ make the sound ‘or’ (as in ‘walk’).
Say, ‘You have a group of four words to learn. Keep the sound ‘or’ in your head as you read them.’
Show your student the flashcards with the letters ‘al’ in them – ‘walk’, ‘talk’, ‘chalk’, ‘stalk’.
Ask your student to read the words quickly, one at a time. You can go through the words two or three times.
Phonics - Blend to Read
Show your student today’s sentences on the 📄 Word Group Sentences Step 35. Show the sentences one at a time by placing a blank sheet of paper on top of the sentences below. Ask your student to read each sentence.
Phonics - Split to Spell
Ask your student to write each of today’s Word Groupwords into a sentence and then read it back to you. Use the mini whiteboard for this activity.
For example:
The apple had a long stalk at the top.
Phonics - Extra Support
Have the flashcards on the table for your student to refer to if they need to. Try to encourage them to look at the flashcard but to turn it over before they write the word so that they write the word from memory.
Phonics - Extra Challenge
Challenge your student to make up a silly sentence with lots of the Word Groupwords in.
Phonics - Apply
Ask your student to write the following words onto the mini whiteboard:
chalking | talking | walked
Keep the 📄 Word Group Flashcards used in today’s lesson and add them into the Quick-fire! activity in the next lesson.
Reading & Writing - Read
Read last lesson’s choice from Big Cat Books. Ask your student to read ‘like a storyteller’, making the reading sound smooth and interesting. Tell them to read at a good pace, not too fast and not too slow.
Now choose a new book from Big Cat Books to read together. Take some time to answer the questions at the back of the book.
Reading & Writing - What to Notice
Is your student becoming increasingly able to read accurately, at a good pace, while thinking about how the reading sounds? Keep praising them for all of their attempts at correcting their mistakes and making the reading sound good.
Reading & Writing - Introduction
Re-watch Superhero ABC.
Ask:
- Can you remember any of the superhero names before you watch them?
Tell your student that today they will start to make their own alphabet of superheroes!
Reading & Writing - Main Activity
Write two names out – maybe your student’s and another. Do this without using capital letters. See if your student notices. If not, ask them if you have done something wrong.
Ask:
- Can you spot the mistake? Oh no! I forgot to use a capital letter for the names!
Go back and correct this.
Remind your student how every superhero name, like our own names, must start with a capital letter.
Explain that you want to make a superhero page with a superhero beginning with a consonant letter. If your student's name starts with a consonant, choose a superhero with a name that starts with the same letter as your student's name.
Ask your student to think about ideas for their page, saying them out loud and talking about their ideas with you.
Use the alphabet ideas from the previous session to help with ideas.
Then together, decide on a name for the superhero and decide on their superpowers. Make a note of these on the sheet and ask your student to draw a picture of their superhero.
Challenge them to speak a sentence aloud that describes their superhero’s superpower, using words that start with the same letter as their name.
For example:
Superhero Clara climbs cliffs to rescue cats.
If you have time, ask your student to write their sentence. Or you could write it for them alongside their picture of their superhero.
Reading & Writing - What to Notice
While they are doing this activity, remember to praise your student for the skills they are using.
For example:
‘Your superhero starts with the same letter as your name! You can describe their superpower using letters that start with that letter too!’
Handwriting and Spelling
Ask your student to go on a Word Hunt and to spot these words in a book (a reading book, bedtime book or a favourite one):
look, too, he, she, we, me, be, was, you, they
Ask:
- Can you turn these words into a sentence?
- What other words will you need?
- Remember to use your best handwriting!
