Today's Lesson
Phonics
Over the next three steps, your phonics activities will be personalised revision activities for your student.
All the instructions are included on the 📄 Daily Phonics Activities sheet.
Reading - Introduction
Show your student 📄 The Nature Table poem. Say a nature table is a special place where objects from nature are displayed; this poem describes objects connected to autumn. Talk with your student about what the season autumn is like where you live. It might be very different from this poem!
Read the poem to them. Try and read it expressively.
Help them understand unfamiliar words, e.g. hip and haw = fruit from the rosehip and hawthorn.
Ask your student to think of what other autumn objects could be included, e.g. conker. Think about how you might describe that object, e.g. shiny, nut brown conkers hard like pebbles. These objects may be different depending on what autumn is like where you live!
Ask your student if they can find any patterns in the poem e.g. a poem about nature, two stanzas long, each line begins with a capital letter, includes descriptive language.
Decide with your student if they like or do not like the poem. Help them to use the word ‘because’ to provide a reason, e.g. I like the poem because autumn is my favourite season.
Display 📄 Tell Me More and explain how they will use this today.
Reading - Main Activity
Your student should be given a selection of 📄 Nature Poems and a copy of 📄 Tell Me More discussion questions.
Ask your student to read through all of the poems. The second sheet contains trickier poems. Help them with any reading they find difficult.
Encourage them to read each poem at least twice.
Ask them to talk with you about which poems they like/don’t like. Remind them to use the word because.
They should then choose their favourite poem and use the 📄 Tell Me More questions to talk about it.
Reading - Extra Support
Take time to share the reading with your student before asking them to read the poems out loud.
Reading - Extra Challenge
Try to work to memorise their favourite poem and add appropriate actions - this will help them when performing their favourite poems for Assignment 11.
Reading - What to Notice
While they are doing this activity, remember to praise your student for the skills they are using.
For example:
‘You are reading aloud so clearly!’
‘You are selecting some great actions!’
Handwriting and Spelling
Children’s handwriting develops at different times. Have a close look at your student's recent writing. Are there letter shapes that they still need to work on? If there are, please continue to choose one or two letters a day this step to focus on.
You may find your student needs to practise letters shapes they find tricky many times before they feel confident. Remember to use the 📄 Letter Formation Ideas resource.
Please revisit any spellings from Year 1 which you feel your student may need to practise more. These could be words that you see them misspelling still in their independent writing.
