Today's Lesson
What to Get Ready
You will be introducing verbs to your student today. Verbs are often called ‘doing words’ as many describe an action.
Have the poems ‘Apple and the Worm’ and ‘Too Sad’ from the 📄 Poetry Pack ready to read in today’s lesson.
Also have a copy of the Reading Tips from the 📄 Poetry Pack ready to look at, cut into cards.
Write the words from 'Blend to Read' (below) on 📄 blank flashcards.
Phonics - Quick Fire!
Quick recognition of sounds.
Phonics - New Learning
Today’s new grapheme is ‘j’ as in ‘jam’.
Show your student the flashcard and teach them the sound.
Phonics - Blend to Read
jeep (3) | just (4) | jammy (4) | jelly (4)
Phonics - Split to Spell

Phonics - Extra Support

Phonics - Extra Challenge

Phonics - Apply
Write this caption on the mini whiteboard: I jump in the jeep. Then ask your student to read the caption.
If your student finds caption reading easy, rather than you writing the caption, you can say the caption and they can write it on the whiteboard.
Reading & Writing - Introduction
Look at the caption again together: I jump in the jeep.
Ask what is the action word here? What is the character doing?
Underline the word jump together.
Ask your student if they can think of any other action words that could have been used instead (leapt, hopped, ran, sat).
Write these words down.
Explain to your student that these kinds of words are called verbs. Explain that a verb is an action word that tells us what is happening in a sentence.
Reading & Writing - Main Activity
Show your student the 📄 Creature Verbs sheet. Talk together about the different animals on the sheet.
Explain that the task is to choose two verbs (action words) for each animal.
For example, when looking at the monkey the two verbs you could choose are ‘climbing’ and ‘swinging’.
Your student will need to write their chosen verbs underneath each animal picture.
Reading & Writing - Extra Support
If your student needs**extra support,**they could write one verb for each animal rather than two.
If your student needs extra support with spelling a word, first ask them to say the word slowly. Ask them, ‘What is the first sound you can hear?’ then, ‘What is the last sound you can hear?’ and, ‘Can you hear any other sounds in the middle?’
You can also encourage them to use their 📄 Alphabet Mat to help them spot the sounds they can hear, but do not tell them the letters/sounds they need. It does not matter if spellings are incorrect.
Reading & Writing - Extra Challenge
If your student needs anextra challengeafter they have completed the sheet, they could choose their favourite animals and write sentences using the verbs they have chosen.
For example:
‘The lion is roaring.’
‘The butterfly is flying.
Reading & Writing - Handwriting and Spelling
Ask your student to spell the three words they have been practising this week. If your student has already remembered how to spell any of these words, choose an extra word from their 📄 High Frequency Word List. Do not start learning any more than seven during this week.
Continue to practise these spellings, choosing an activity from the 📄 Weekly Spelling Activities. Remember that it is a good idea to choose a different activity each day.
