Today's Lesson

Introduction

Remind your student of conjunctions, using 📄 Conjunctions to help you, by asking:

  • Can you remember any conjunctions? (‘and’, ‘or’, ‘but’, ‘when’, ‘if’, ‘because’)
  • Can you remember what they are used for? (joining sentences)
  • Can you say a sentence with a conjunction in it?

Main Activity

Show your student 📄 Conjunctions and 📄 Conjunction Sentences. Read the sentences together and explain that they will need to finish the sentences off. They are waiting to be finished because they have a conjunction but nothing to join up to!

Give your student time to work through the sentences. Encourage them to have a go at writing words by saying them aloud, listening to the sounds in the words and writing down what they can hear.

Remind them to read through their sentences when they have finished to make sure they make sense and that they haven’t missed any words out.

Extra Challenge

Do as above and then ask your student to write more sentences, using other conjunctions that haven’t been used in the sentences provided in 📄 Conjunction Sentences.

What to Notice

While they are doing this activity, remember to praise your student for the skills they are using.

For example:

‘You are using your conjunctions well and making your sentences sound longer and more interesting.’

Handwriting and Spelling

Today, dictate these sentences (using ‘and’, ‘or’ and ‘but’) to your student and ask them to write them using their best handwriting:

  1. Dad went to the shop and got ten eggs.
  2. He wanted to get ten eggs or a box of eggs.
  3. He had a look at the box of eggs but did not get it.
