Today's Lesson

What to Get Ready

Before the lesson, watch Video 9: The Phonics Lesson. This video will show you how to teach a phonics lesson. Try to follow this type of lesson.

You will notice that in some sections of this lesson plan there is less information. This is because the methods of teaching are the same methods you have been using every day for the previous two steps.

You may also find it useful to print out a copy of the 📄 Blend and Split Tips to use for reference.

Write the words from 'Blend to Read' (below) on 📄 blank flashcards.

Ensure your student has completed the previous lessons’ ‘Life Cycle of a Caterpillar’ booklet. Ask an adult if they would be happy to act as an audience for the student sharing their booklet.

Assignment

This lesson works towards Assignment 1.

Please access the assignment for details about what you will need to submit to your student's Wolsey Hall tutor. Please note that your student's booklet will be submitted to Canvas once you have completed Step****3.

Phonics - Quickfire

Quick recall of sounds using 📄 flashcards.

Phonics - New Learning

There are no new sounds to learn today.

Phonics - Blend to Read

damp (4) | shop (3) | click (4) | sand (4)

To help you, the number of sounds in each word is written in brackets after the word.

Phonics - Split to Spell

bump (4) | had (3) | dogs (4) | flop (4)

To help you, the number of sounds in each word is written in brackets after the word. You will need to draw this many Sound Beds (lines) on the mini whiteboard.

Phonics - Extra Support

Blending to read: if your student needs extra support with blending sounds to read a word, ask them to say the sounds slowly. Then they can say them faster until they can hear the word.

Splitting to spell: on the whiteboard, give your student only the sounds they need to write the word. This means they just need to order them and write them into the Sound Beds.

Phonics - Apply

Write this caption on the mini whiteboard: a duck and a frog. Ask your student to read the caption.

Phonics - Extra Challenge

stump (5) | clamp (5) | clump (5) | stamps (6)

To help you, the number of sounds in each word is written in brackets after the word.

Phonics Play

Log in to Phonics Play. Select Phase 2. Then select 'Revise all Phase 2' for your student to play.

PLAY - Buried Treasure - Phase 2 (Phonics Play)

Reading & Writing - Introduction

Explain that you are going to read the start of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Read the book too quietly, too quickly, in a bored voice, not making eye contact and not letting your student see the pages. Ask your student what you are doing wrong.

Reading & Writing - Speaking and Listening

Explain that they are going to be reading their 'Life Cycle of a Caterpillar’ booklet to an adult. Think together about what makes a ‘good reader’. Remind them of what made you a ‘boring reader’ when you read The Very Hungry Caterpillar. You or your student could write a list of what makes a ‘good reader’. It might include making eye contact, not reading too fast, using a clear voice, reading in an exciting way and sharing the pictures with your audience.

Ask your student to read their ‘Life Cycle of a Caterpillar’ booklet to you. Then tell them what they are doing really well and suggest one thing that they could improve. For example, ‘You are using eye contact. Next time, try using a louder voice.’

Allow your student the time to practise this new skill.

When your student is ready, ask them to share their ‘Life Cycle of a Caterpillar’ booklet with another adult.

Reading & Writing - Extra Support

If your student needs extra support you could give them more time to practise before sharing.

Reading & Writing - Extra Challenge

If your student is ready for an extra challenge you could ask the adult to ask them some questions when they have finished reading their ‘Life Cycle of a Caterpillar’ booklet.

Reading & Writing - What to Notice

Wait until the end of this activity to praise your student. You could say, ‘Well done for speaking in a clear voice!’ or, ‘I liked the way you answered the adult’s questions.’

Reading & Writing - Handwriting and Spelling

Look back through your student's ‘Life Cycle of a Caterpillar’ booklet with them. Ask them to point out the small letters that they have used. Ask them which are formed correctly and which ones they would like to practise more. Help your student to practise forming the letters they are finding tricky.

They could also see what words they could make using just small letters, for example, ‘sun’, ‘won’, ‘van’, ‘no’. They could then practise writing these words on a mini whiteboard or on paper.
