Quick recognition of sounds.

Phonics - New Learning

Write the letter ‘a’ on the mini whiteboard. Ask your student what sounds they know for this letter (they may say ‘a’ as in ‘ant’ or ‘ay’ as in ‘angel’). Tell your student that this letter sometimes makes the sound ‘o’ as in ‘wash’. This often happens when it follows the letter w.

Tell your student that today they are going to learn The Three Little Pigs by heart. But first, ask:

  • Can you remember the ‘chorus’ of the story you learnt yesterday (I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house in?)

Reading - Main Activity

Show your student 📄 The Three Little Pigs Storybook.

Ask them to read this version of the story to you remembering all of their reading skills**.**

Tell them that we are going to try and learn the story by heart.

To learn a story, it needs to be simple and repetitive.

Then begin to learn this version together by heart. The best way to do this is to:

  1. Read the story all the way through with your student.
  2. Then read the first few sentences with actions (for example by putting your hand on your head for certain words).
  3. Ask your student to repeat that section with you.
  4. Read the next section with actions.
  5. Try and retell the first section and this section together.
  6. Keep adding sections by reading them with the actions and adding them to the retelling of the story.

You might find it is easier to learn if you go on a walk and say the sections out loud, or you could jump on a trampoline or kick a ball to each other as you say the story aloud together.

Adding sound effects and actions (and always doing those actions at the same time and place in the story) will help you and your student remember the story without reading it.

Encourage your student to add expression to the story as they remember it and say it aloud.

Reading - What to Notice

While they are doing this activity, remember to praise your student for the skills they are using.

For example:

‘You are doing so well at remembering the story!’

‘You are adding such a lot of expression into the story – well done!’

Handwriting and Spelling

  1. Encourage your student to read through their writing to make sure they have spelt words correctly.

Words they need to look out for are:

a, an, as, at, if, in, is, it, of, off

  1. Ask them to write a sentence with one of these words in it.
  2. Ask them to look for these words in one of their reading or bedtime books.
  3. Dictate these sentences to them. They should use their best handwriting:

The teddy is in the bed.

The dog is off on a run.
