Today's Lesson
Phonics
Over the next three steps, your phonics activities will be personalised revision activities for your student.
All the instructions are included on the 📄 Daily Phonics Activities sheet.
Reading - Introduction
Say that today, we will read and talk about a poem that includes pairs of rhyming words.
Show and read 📄 Ready, Steady - Moo!
Ask your student if they notice any patterns in the poem, e.g. 7 verses, each verse has 4 lines, each verse includes one pair of rhyming words.
Consider with your student if they like/don’t like the poem. Help them use ‘because’ to explain what they think, e.g. I like the poem because it describes what the cow thinks.
Ask your student to find the pairs of rhyming words in each verse, e.g. sun/along; day/way; place/face; alone/home.
Think about which words are spelt the same and which are different. Remind your student that rhyming words have the same end sound but not necessarily the same spelling. Today we’ll read two poems and highlight the rhyming words.
Reading - Main Activity
Give your student a copy of 📄 Ready, Steady - Moo! and 📄 Breakfast. Ask them to read through each poem; encourage them to read each poem at least twice.
They should then highlight pairs of rhyming words in each poem. Challenge them to identify which rhyming words are spelt the same and which are not.
Ask them to choose one poem as their favourite and use ‘because’ to explain their choice.
Reading - Extra Challenge
Try to write any new words which rhyme with the rhyming pairs they have found.
Reading - What to Notice
While they are doing this activity, remember to praise your student for the skills they are using.
For example:
‘You are selecting rhyming words! Well done!
Handwriting and Spelling
Children’s handwriting develops at different times. Have a close look at your student's recent writing. Are there letter shapes that they still need to work on? If there are, please continue to choose one or two letters a day this step to focus on.
You may find your student needs to practise letters shapes they find tricky many times before they feel confident. Remember to use the 📄 Letter Formation Ideas resource.
Please revisit any spellings from Year 1 which you feel your student may need to practise more. These could be words that you see them misspelling still in their independent writing.
