Today's Lesson

Phonics

Over the next three steps, your phonics activities will be personalised revision activities for your student.

All the instructions are included on the 📄 Daily Phonics Activities sheet.

Reading - Introduction

Read the poem 📄 Where? out loud and then show your student the first copy without the highlighted words.

Explain that sometimes poems play with letters as well as sounds.

Say that this poem is very cleverly written as each word is hidden in the answer! Can they spot any?

Then show them the other copy of the poem with the words highlighted.

Reading - Main Activity

Ask your student to try to write two lines to hide the word ‘word’.

They should start by writing out the letters and then think how they could split it.

For example, they could have a word that ends in ‘w’, such as ‘crow’, then the word ‘or’ then a word that starts with a ‘d’, such as ‘dove’.

For example:

Where do you hide a word?

In a crow or dove’s nest

Use the resource 📄 Help in hiding a word to support your student with this task.

Reading - Extra Challenge

Can your student continue this challenge using a different word?

Reading - What to Notice

While they are doing this activity, remember to praise your student for the skills they are using.

For example:

‘You are looking closely at the words!’

Handwriting and Spelling

Children’s handwriting develops at different times. Have a close look at your student's recent writing. Are there letter shapes that they still need to work on? If there are, please continue to choose one or two letters a day this step to focus on.

You may find your student needs to practise letters shapes they find tricky many times before they feel confident. Remember to use the 📄 Letter Formation Ideas resource.

Please revisit any spellings from Year 1 which you feel your student may need to practise more. These could be words that you see them misspelling still in their independent writing.
