Today's Lesson

What to Get Ready

Log in to Big Cat Books.

Print the document 📄 Word Group Flashcards, trim the flashcards and have the flashcards needed for today’s lesson (‘group’, ‘soup’, ‘you’ and ‘youth’) ready to use.

Print out the 📄 Word Group Sentences Step 34.

Before this session, write a few sentences and a few non-sentences (just words or phrases or sentences with missing capital letters and full stops) on a large piece of paper. Write these about a superhero and include what they are doing or where they might be.

For example:

‘The powerful girl was standing on the edge of the park with her big red cape on.’

Don’t forget to leave out some words and punctuation from some of your sentences.

Phonics - Quick Fire!

Quick reading of words from the **📄 Word Bank**written on flashcards.

Quick reading of a selection of Word Groupwords learned so far.

Phonics - New Learning

Write the split digraph ‘o_e’ on the mini whiteboard. Tell your student that in a few words the letters ‘o_e’ make the sound ‘u’ (as in ‘love’).

Say, ‘You have a group of four words to learn. Keep the sound ‘u’ in your head as you read them.’

Show your student the flashcards with the letters ‘o_e’ in them – ‘some’, ‘love’, ‘come’, ‘above’.

Ask your student to read the words quickly, one at a time. You can go through the words two or three times.

Phonics - Blend to Read

Show your student today’s sentences on the 📄 Word Group Sentences Step 34. Show the sentences one at a time by placing a blank sheet of paper on top of the sentences below.  Ask your student to read each sentence.

Phonics - Split to Spell

Ask your student to write each of today’s Word Groupwords into a sentence and then read it back to you. Use the mini whiteboard for this activity.

For example:

I love cuddles.

Phonics - Extra Support

Have the flashcards on the table for your student to refer to if they need to. Try to encourage them to look at the flashcard but to turn it over before they write the word so that they write the word from memory.

Phonics - Extra Challenge

Challenge your student to make up a silly sentence with lots of the Word Groupwords in.

For example:

I would love to drop some jelly on your head from above.

Phonics - Apply

Ask your student to write the following words onto the mini whiteboard:

lovely

become

something

Keep the 📄 Word Group Flashcards used in today’s lesson and add them into the Quick-fire! activity in the next lesson.

Reading & Writing - Introduction

Allow your student to choose a book from Big Cat Books. Try to select from the Orange or Turquoise collections.

Ask your student to read ‘like a storyteller’, making the reading sound smooth and interesting. Tell them to read at a good pace, not too fast and not too slow.

Ask:

  • Can you tell me about the superhero we thought about yesterday?
  • What sort of powers might they have?
  • What else might they be really good at?
  • What might they look like?

Look back at the picture together.

Reading & Writing - Main Activity

Say, today we are going to look at some sentences about superheroes. Some of these sentences make sense. Some do not. We need to sort them out.

Talk about how sentences have a capital letter at the start and a full stop at the end.

Look at the sentences and non-sentences that you have prepared and read them together.

Then together, decide which are full sentences and which are not. Correct those with missing capital letters and full stops.

Next, give your student a pen and paper. Then say that they are going to write a sentence that you will say out loud.

Say this sentence slowly and clearly so they can write the words:

There are superheroes at the beach and superheroes at the park.

Encourage your student to have a go at this sentence. Do not worry if they do not spell the words correctly – instead, encourage them to listen to the sounds in the words and write down what they hear. Ask them to start and finish the sentence correctly (to start with a capital letter and end with a full stop).

Reading & Writing - Extra Challenge

Do as above and then ask your student to think of two or three superheroes and to write descriptive words and phrases to describe each of them.

Reading & Writing - What to Notice

While they are doing this activity, remember to praise your student for the skills they are using.

For example:

‘Your sentences look fantastic – they start with a capital letter and end with a full stop!’

‘You have listened carefully to the sounds in the words and had a go at writing them – well done!’

Handwriting and Spelling

8a.pngAsk your student to go on a Word Hunt and to try to spot these words in a book (a reading book, bedtime book or another favourite one):

not, got, up, mum, but, put, the, to, I, no, into

Now write them out using their best handwriting.
