What to Get Ready
Write the words from 'Blend to Read' (below) on 📄 blank flashcards.
Prepare flashcards with the following words: ‘hooting’, ‘bleating’, ‘hissing’, ‘squeaking’, ‘barking’, ‘yowling’, ‘trumpeting’.
Over the next couple of steps your student is going to be writing about themselves. Each piece of writing will be on a separate piece of paper.
You might like to keep these pieces of paper together. You could use a folder, stick them into a scrap book or staple the sheets together at the end.
Phonics - Quick Fire!
Quick recognition of sounds.
Phonics - New Learning
Today’s new grapheme is ‘ay’ as in ‘day’.
Show your student the 📄 flashcard and teach them the sound.
Phonics - Blend to Read
day (2) | may (2) | sway (3) | spray (4)
Phonics - Split to Spell

Phonics - Extra Support
Give your student only the graphemes they need to spell the word. If they find this easy, give them the graphemes they need plus one or two more to choose from.
Encourage your student to count the sounds they can hear so that they don’t miss any out when writing the word.
Phonics - Extra Challenge
Reading & Writing - Introduction
Explain to your student that over the next couple of steps they are going to be doing lots of writing all about themselves!
Today they will be making a fact file. This will include basic information about them.
Reading & Writing - Main Activity
Together look at the list of nouns from earlier during this step. Ask your student to remind you what nouns are. If they can’t remember, reteach this from Step 10 Lesson 2.
Explain that some nouns are called ‘proper nouns’. They are called this because they name a specific person, place or object, For example, Sydney, David, Thursday, August, Disneyland. They will always begin with a capital letter. Notice that your student has been using some ‘proper nouns’ in their handwriting this step too.
Show your student the 📄 Fact File Template. Remind them, that when they are filling it in, they may have to use proper nouns (for example, their name, the name of their home country. Proper nouns always start with a capital letter.
Your student might like to check capital letter shapes on their 📄 Alphabet Mat.
Finally, your student might like to draw a picture of themselves in the box.
Reading & Writing - Handwriting and Spelling
Explain that today your student will be continuing to practise their handwriting by writing the days of the week.
Today they will practise writing the days Wednesday and Thursday. Remind your student that these are proper nouns which mean they start with a capital letter.
Ask your student to write Wednesday on the mini whiteboard (you can call out the letters for them). Ask them to decide which letters they have formed the best. Ask them to choose one letter to practise.
Repeat with the word Thursday.
