Today's Lesson

Assignment

This lesson works towards Assignment 2. Please access the Assignment for details about what you will need to submit to your student's Wolsey Hall tutor.

What to Get Ready

Login to Big Cat Books and search for Best Bird.

Make sure you have access to your student's library of familiar books.

Write the words from 'Blend to Read' (below) on 📄 blank flashcards.

Today you will be filming your student reading.  This video will be submitted for Assignment 2. Have your recording equipment ready.

Phonics - Quick Fire!

Quick recognition of sounds.

Make sure you are now spending more time on newer sounds and those that your student does not know well.

Phonics - Apply

Write this caption on the mini whiteboard: he is munching the chip with his teeth. Then ask your student to read the caption.

If your student finds caption reading easy, rather than you writing the caption, you can say the caption and they can write it on the whiteboard.

Phonics - What to Notice

Now the words to read and spell have more sounds in them, how is your student managing? Are they able to remember how many sounds they need to write? Can they blend more than five sounds together?

Reading & Writing - Introduction

Allow your student to choose one book from their library to read to you.

Reading & Writing - New Learning

‘Take a Peek’ atBest Bird. Some important things to draw your student’s attention to:

  • The repeated sentence opener: ‘I can...’
  • Allow your student to look at the images of the different animals and guess what each might be best at. Ask questions like, ‘If it were penguin, what skills might it have?’
  • Tell your student the word ‘you’re’

Reading & Writing - Read

Start recording your student reading Best Bird.

Record for a maximum of 5 minutes.

This video will be submitted for Assignment 2.

Reading & Writing - Extra Support

If your student is trying to blend all the sounds in a word, try to help them use the meaning and pictures as well as the letters they can see to help them.

Reading & Writing - Extra Challenge

Ask your student to make the reading sound like a ‘real storyteller’ by reading with greater pace.

Reading & Writing - What to Notice

Is your student using repeated phrases such as ‘I can...*’*to help them read ‘like a storyteller’? Or do they try to blend the sounds in these words?
