Today's Lesson

Phonics

Over the next three steps, your phonics activities will be personalised revision activities for your student.

All the instructions are included on the 📄 Daily Phonics Activities sheet.

Reading - Introduction

Show and read 📄 What We Found at the Seaside.

Say that the poet has chosen words carefully to help the reader imagine the seaside.

Ask: Can you spot any patterns in the poem? e.g. 1 stanza, rhyme, –ing verb ending, alliteration.

Ask: Have you got any favourite words or phrases?  Remind them to use the word because when talking about them.

Find pairs of rhyming words and highlight them. Say that words rhyme when they have the same end sound but they don’t always have the same spelling.

Select a pair of rhyming words from the poem and write them underneath each other, perhaps on the whiteboard, e.g. purring, stirring.

Think of other words which rhyme with them and add them to the list, e.g. blurring, slurring, whirring, occurring.

Reading - Main Activity

Give your student a copy of 📄 In My Garden.

They should read the poem and highlight the pairs of rhyming words.

Reading - Extra Challenge

12b.pngTry to write any new words which rhyme with these pairs.

Reading - What to Notice

While they are doing this activity, remember to praise your student for the skills they are using.

For example:

‘You are selecting rhyming words! Well done!

Handwriting and Spelling

Children’s handwriting develops at different times. Have a close look at your student's recent writing. Are there letter shapes that they still need to work on? If there are, please continue to choose one or two letters a day this step to focus on.

You may find your student needs to practise letters shapes they find tricky many times before they feel confident. Remember to use the 📄 Letter Formation Ideas resource.

Please revisit any spellings from Year 1 which you feel your student may need to practise more. These could be words that you see them misspelling still in their independent writing.
