Today's Lesson
What to Get Ready
Write the words from 'Blend to Read' (below) on 📄 blank flashcards.
Phonics - Quick Fire!
Quick recognition of sounds.
Phonics - New Learning
Show your student the flashcard ‘oar’. This group of letters is another way of writing the sound ‘or’ as in ‘roar’.
Phonics - Blend to Read
roar (2) | roaring (4) | oars (2) | hoard (3)
Phonics - Split to Spell
board (3) | soaring (4) | boarding (5) | boar (2)
Phonics - Extra Support
Show your student how to blend to read/split to spell the first word in each activity.
Phonics - Extra Challenge
Challenge your student to write the words without Sound Beds to help them.
Phonics - Apply
Write this caption on the mini whiteboard: the lion is roaring while the eagle is soaring and the wild boar is digging in the mud. Then ask your student to read the caption.
Reading - Introduction
Read yesterday’s choice from Big Cat Books. Ask your student to read ‘like a storyteller’, making the reading sound smooth and interesting. Tell them to read at a good pace, not too fast and not too slow.
Now choose a new book from Big Cat Books to read together. Try to choose a book form the Orange or Turquoise collections.
Reading - Storytelling
Tell the story of The Three Little Pigs together. This time, try to have a go at telling the story to another family member. Discuss what actions and sound effects you will add before you do so. Use 📄 Finger Puppets to help you.
Reading - Main Activity
Write this sentence for your student to see:
The Wolf blew down the straw house.
Ask your student how they could make the sentence longer. Listen to their suggestions.
Now write:
The Little Pig ran away.
Ask:
- If we put these sentences together, it would make a really long sentence. How can we join these two sentences together?
Using 📄 Conjunctions to remind you, talk to your student about what word they could use to join the two sentences together.
For example:
The Wolf blew down the straw house and the Little Pig ran away.
Talk together about other short sentences you could make longer by using a conjunction and joining sentences together.
Have fun thinking of longer sentences and using conjunctions. Write some and display them for your student to see in the next sessions.
Reading - Extra Challenge
Do as above and then ask your student to fill in 📄 Writing Longer Sentences using the pictures on the sheets to give them ideas.
Reading - What to Notice
While they are doing this activity, remember to praise your student for the skills they are using.
For example:
‘I love your sentences. They are very interesting when you use conjunctions to join two sentences together.’
Handwriting and Spelling
Today, ask your student to think of as many words as they can that sound like (rhyme) with ‘brick’ (for example: lick, nick, trick).
Make a list of these using their best handwriting.
