Today's Lesson

What to Get Ready

Write the words from 'Blend to Read' (below) on 📄 blank flashcards.

Print out the 📄 Giraffe facts sheet. Cut along the orange lines so each fact is separate.

Phonics - Quick Fire!

Quick recognition of sounds.

Phonics - New Learning

Tell your student that they will be revising the 📄 flashcard ‘ur’. What sound does this digraph make? Answer: ‘ur’ as in ‘hurt’.

Phonics - Blend to Read

curling (5) | surfer (4) | Thursday (5) | curvy (4)

Phonics - Split to Spell

turn (3) | blurt (4) | churn (3) | bursting (6)

Phonics - Extra Support

Show your student how to blend to read/split to spell the first word in each activity.

Phonics - Extra Challenge

burdening (7) | lurcher (4)

Challenge your student to write the words without Sound Beds to help them.

Phonics - Apply

Write this caption on the mini whiteboard: the surfer rode the churning, curling waves. Then ask your student to read the caption.

If your student finds caption reading easy, rather than you writing the caption, you can say the caption and they can write it on the whiteboard.

Reading & Writing - Introduction

Play the ‘Guess the animal’ game again with your student.

To play this game, secretly choose an animal and give your student clues about that animal one at a time. After each clue, your student can try to guess your animal.

For example, if your animal is a rabbit, your clues could be:

  • My animal is small.
  • My animal has long ears.
  • My animal jumps.

When you student has guessed correctly you can swap roles.

Reading & Writing - New Learning

Lay one of the 📄 Giraffe facts out on the table and read the fact to your student. Talk about the fact with your student, checking they understand what it means.

Ask your student to draw a quick picture on a sticky note to help them to remember the fact. When the drawing is finished ask your student to stick it to the fact.

Move on to the next fact.

If your student needs extra support, you may choose just to look at three of the facts rather than all six.

Speaking and Listening

Ask your student to pick out their favourite giraffe fact.

Explain that we are now going to think of an action to go with this fact. Think of possible actions together and choose the best one.

For example, for the fact: ‘Giraffes can sleep standing up’ you might choose to stand up and lay your head on your hands as if you were sleeping.

Practise together saying the fact and doing the action at the same time.

Repeat with the other facts.

Reading & Writing - Apply

This part of the lesson is a chance to help your student memorise the facts. They do not need to say the facts word for word, just to understand the general idea!

Here are some activities you could try:

  • You say the fact and your student does the matching action.
  • You do the action and your student says the fact.
  • You show the picture for the fact and your student does the action.
  • You show the picture and your student says the fact.

Reading & Writing - What to Notice

While they are doing this activity, remember to praise your student for the skills they are using.

For example:

‘I can see you are thinking really hard.’

‘That picture will really help you remember the fact.’

‘You said that fact really clearly.’

Handwriting and Spelling

Ask your student to spell the words they have been practising this step. If your student has already remembered how to spell any of these words, choose an extra word from their 📄 High Frequency Word List. Do not start learning any more than eight during this step.

Continue to practise these spellings, choosing an activity from the 📄 Weekly Spelling Activities. Remember that it is a good idea to choose a different activity each day.
