Today's Lesson
What to Get Ready
Make sure you have access to your student's library of familiar books.
Write the words from 'Blend to Read' (below) on 📄 blank flashcards.
Please note: This step’s learning will be based around a new animal. A lion will be mentioned in the plans, but you could choose to write about your student's favourite animal if you prefer. If you choose to use a different animal, say that animal’s name instead of ‘lion’, whenever lions are mentioned in the plan.
If your student is learning about their favourite animal, you will need to choose the words you will ask them to add to the glossary today. Look at the parts of the animal your student labelled in Step 23 Lesson 1. Are there any parts they have not labelled? You could teach them the name of these parts today.
For this lesson you will need to know the names of these parts and to know a definition to share with your student.
Phonics - Quick Fire!
Quick recognition of sounds.
Phonics - New Learning
Show your student the 📄 flashcard ‘oi’. Teach them that these letters together make the sound ‘oy’ as in ‘coin’.
Phonics - Blend to Read
oil (2) | foil (3) | moist (4) | spoil (4)
Phonics - Split to Spell
boil (3) | join (3) | hoist (4) | coiling (5)
Phonics - Extra Support
Show your student how to blend to read/split to spell the first word in each activity.
Phonics - Extra Challenge
choice (3) | rejoice (5) | boiler (4)
Challenge your student to write the words without Sound Beds to help them.
Phonics - Apply
Write this caption on the mini whiteboard: the foil kept the food moist. Then ask your student to read the caption.
If your student finds caption reading easy, rather than you writing the caption, you can say the caption and they can write it on the whiteboard.
Reading & Writing - Introduction
Choose two or three books from your student's library to read. Remind your student to be a Reading Detective and to read like a storyteller.
Speaking & Listening
Explain to your student that today they are going to be learning some new parts of a lion.
Say the word ‘muzzle’ to your student. Ask them to repeat it back to you until they are saying it correctly.
Say, ‘This is the part of the lion’s face that sticks out.’ Show your student where this part is on the larger 📄 Lion pictures.
Ask your student to think of an action to go with the word muzzle. Practise doing this action while saying, ‘Muzzle: the part of the face that sticks out.’
When your student knows the definition well, ask them to write it down on the 📄 Glossary sheet. They may also like to add the word as a label to their lion picture from Step 23 Lesson 1.
Repeat the process with one of the glossary words listed below. If your student is ready for an extra challenge you may choose to complete more than one.
- claw: a curved pointy nail
- fore legs: an animal’s front legs
- hind legs: an animal’s back legs
- paw: an animal’s padded foot
Reading & Writing - What to Notice
While they are doing this activity, remember to praise your student for the skills they are using.
For example:
‘What a great action, that will really help us to remember the word.’
‘Well done for remembering your finger spaces.’
‘Well done for using your finger to check that sentence makes sense.’
Handwriting and Spelling
This step you will have chosen to either continue to practise individual letter shapes or work on 📄 Pre-Joining Patterns.
Continue with this at the end of every lesson this step.
