Today's Lesson

Introduction

Watch this lesson's introductory video with your student.

What to Get Ready

Make sure you have access to the books in your student's library of familiar books for them to choose from today.

Also have the storyboard you began in Step 4 Lesson 4 ready to continue working on.

Write the words from 'Blend to Read' (below) on 📄 blank flashcards.

Phonics - Quick Fire!

Quick recognition of sounds learnt so far.

At this stage there will be some sounds that your student knows very well. You can remove these from the quick-fire activity and spend more time on newer sounds.

Phonics - New Learning

Today’s new sound is ‘th’ as in ‘thin’.

Show your student this flashcard and teach them the sound.

Phonics - Blend to Read

thin (3) | thick (3) | cloth (3)

Phonics - Split to Spell

moth (3) | thud (3)

Phonics - Extra Support

Blending to read: ask your student to say the sounds slowly and allow them to blend together. Then they can say them faster until they can hear the word.

Splitting to spell: on the whiteboard, give your student only the sounds they need to write the word. This means they just need to order them and write them into the Sound Beds.

Phonics - Extra Challenge

three (3) | theft (4)

Phonics - Apply

Write this caption on the mini whiteboard: the three moths sit on the cloth.  Then ask your student to read the caption.

If your student finds caption reading easy, rather than you writing the caption, you can say the caption and they can write it on the whiteboard.

Phonics Play

Log in to Phonics Play.

PLAY - Dragon's Den - Phase 3 (Phonics Play)

Select Phase 3. Select 'Revise all Phase 3'. Ask your student to play 'Dragon's Den'.

Reading - Introduction

Collect together a selection of books that your student enjoys reading. This will include The Very Hungry Caterpillar plus it might include any books that your student may have practised reading before.

Tell your student that you are going to start a little library for them so that they can read whenever they feel like it.

Allow your student to choose a book from their library to read to you.

Reading - Main Activity

Ask your student to tell you about the storyboard they began in Step 4 Lesson 4.

You may ask:

‘Can you tell me how this character is feeling?’

‘What happens next in the story?’

‘What does this character say?’

‘What happens in the end?’

‘Can you say those words like the character would say them?’

Then allow your student some more time to work on their storyboard. They will have more time in Step 5 Lesson 2 as well.

Reading - Extra Support

If your student needs help with imagining what will happen in their story, look again at the 📊 Little Red Hen PowerPoint and talk about ways in which their own story could be similar.
