Today's Lesson

What to Get Ready

Have the poems ‘The Worm’ by Ralph Bergengren, from the 📄 Poetry Pack ready to read in today’s lesson.

Write the words from 'Blend to Read' (below) on 📄 blank flashcards.

Print out a copy of the poem 📄 'Down Behind the Dustbin'and a copy of the 📄 Comprehension Questions resources.

Phonics - Quick Fire!

Quick recognition of sounds.

Phonics - New Learning

Today’s new grapheme is ‘u’ as in ‘put’ and ‘bush’.

Phonics - Blend to Read

bushy (4) | pulling (5) | full (3) | pushing (5)

Phonics - Split to Spell

bush (3) | pull (3) | bully (4) | fully (4)

Phonics - Extra Support

put (3) | bull (3)

Phonics - Extra Challenge

Challenge your student to make up their own captions using the words they have blended and split. They might also need to use extra words of their own.

Phonics - Apply

Write this caption on the mini whiteboard: the bull is in the bush. Then ask your student to read the caption.

If your student finds caption reading easy, rather than you writing the caption, you can say the caption and they can write it on the whiteboard.

Reading & Writing - Introduction

Tell your student that today they will be starting to think about creating the actions for a new poem.

Read the poem ‘The Worm’ by Ralph Bergengren to your student. Ask them to listen carefully to the words and to think about any they could show with actions.

Read the poem to your student again and ask them to do the actions when they hear the words. Are there any more actions they could add?

Keep practising the poem with the actions and encourage your student to join in with any words they can as well.

Reading & Writing - Main Activity

Watch the 'Down Behind the Dustbin' performance.

Read the poem **📄 'Down Behind the Dustbin'**by Michael Rosen

Ask your student, ‘What do you think about the poem? Who do you think is meeting the different dogs in the poem?’

Read the poem again and ask your student to join in where they can.

Together with your student, see if you can spot the words in the poem that rhyme. Highlight the pairs of words with a highlighter.

Can your student remember any other rhyming words from the 'Down Behind the Dustbin' performance?

Reading & Writing - Writing

Show your student the 📄 Comprehension Questions. Read through any parts they find tricky to read.

Give your student time to answer the questions on the sheet.

Reading & Writing - Handwriting and Spelling

Ask your student to practise writing capital letters ‘K’, ‘L’, ‘M’, ‘N’ and ‘O’ on 📄 lined paper.

If they are finding any of these letters tricky, they could practise further on a mini whiteboard.

As an extra challenge, they could then write the capital letters at the start of some different names. For example: ‘Kris’, ‘Lena’, ‘Maz’, ‘Nicole’ and ‘Oskar’.

Reading & Writing - Extra Support

If your student needs extra support to pick out the words that could have actions, make some suggestions. For example, ‘Could you give an action to the word birds? What could the action be?’ Help them to find the rhyming pairs by emphasising these words when reading aloud.

Reading & Writing - Extra Challenge

Encourage your student to learn whole lines or phrases from the poem and to recite these with actions. Ask them to find the rhyming words by themselves when reading aloud.
