Today's Lesson

What to Get Ready

Make sure you have access to your student's library of familiar books.

Write the words from 'Blend to Read' (below) on 📄 blank flashcards.

In today’s lesson it is planned that your student will be telling their story to an audience. Every student learns differently. If you think your student needs longer to practise the story before sharing with an audience, move this lesson to a later date.

Remember that if your audience member is not able to be there, you can film the storytelling and send it to them.

If the audience member is able to be there, remind them to smile while they are being told the story and to give your student lots of positive praise at the end!

Phonics - Quick Fire!

Quick recognition of sounds.

Phonics - New Learning

Tell your student that they will be learning different ways of writing the sound ‘z’ (as in ‘zoo’).

Show your student the 📄 flashcard ‘zz’. Teach them that it is another way of making the sound ‘z’ (as in ‘zoo’).

Phonics - Blend to Read

fizz (3) | buzz (3) | fizzy (4)

Phonics - Split to Spell

jazz (3) | jazzy (4) | dizzy (4)

Phonics - Extra Support

Show your student how to blend to read/split to spell the first word in each activity.

Phonics - Extra Challenge

Challenge your student to write the words without Sound Beds to help them.

Phonics - Apply

Write this caption on the mini whiteboard: the bee is buzzy and the sweet is fizzy. Then ask your student to read the caption.

If your student finds caption reading easy, rather than you writing the caption, you can say the caption and they can write it on the whiteboard.

Phonics Play

Log in to Phonics Play.

PLAY - 'Buzz' Comic - Phase 3 (Phonics Play Comics)

Read the comic 'Buzz'.

Reading & Writing - Introduction

Allow your student to choose two books from their library to read to you. Ask them to concentrate on being a ‘Reading Detective’ and on making the reading sound ‘like a storyteller’.

Reading & Writing - Main Activity

Together look at the ‘What makes a good storyteller?’ list.

Ask: ‘What is your storytelling target?’

If they want, your student could practise telling the start of the story first, using their storytelling target.

Reading & Writing - Apply

It is now time for your student to tell their story to an audience!

Reading & Writing - What to Notice

While they are doing this activity remember to praise your student for the skills they are using.

For example:

‘My favourite part was….’

‘I loved the voice you did for...’

‘That part really made me laugh!’

Reading & Writing - Handwriting and Spelling

This step you will have chosen to either continue to practise individual letter shapes or work on 📄 pre-joining patterns.

Continue with this at the end of each of the lessons this step.
