Today's Lesson
Main Activity
Last lesson we looked at using co-ordinates to find locations on a map. Grid references work using the same principal, but this time we will use just numbers like professional geographers do. Work through the Grid References PowerPoint, slides 1-10 together.
Check that your student understands the concept by having a go at the 4-figure Grid References Sheet. If your child is struggling with this, stay at this level and practise some more with the worksheet βGrid References Level 1β. You could also watch the Grid Reference video clip.

Don't worry if they do not move on to 6-figures; this is a difficult skill for their age group and will be recapped again in later years.
If you feel that your student has fully understood 4-figure grid references, however, go back to the PowerPoint and look at slides 11-16 which explain 6-figure grid references. They can then complete Grid References Level 2.
Challenge Activity
If your student is feeling confident with 6-figure grid references, have a go at the 6-Figure Grid Reference Game. How quickly can they get them all correct? Can their teacher beat their time?
