Today's Lesson
What to Get Ready
Today we are going to attempt a difficult task, which is to draw a sketch map of your local area.
First let's recap with a question.
Q: What features does a good map need?
A: A title, a key, symbols, a compass, a scale, grid references.
A sketch map is drawn by hand and is used to find your way around a small area, so it doesn't need a scale or grid references.
This piece of work will be assessed, so read the Assignment instructions carefully with your student before they start. You are likely to need to go for a quick walk around the area before you begin to remind yourselves of locations and street names.
Once your student is ready, ask them to follow the Assignment instructions until their map is complete.
Challenge Activity
Can your student write an evaluation of their map? Ask them to try to write three good things about it and three things that they think could be improved.
