Today's Lesson

Main Activity

In our ‘Natural Hazards’ topic so far, we have looked at tectonic hazards; for the rest of this topic we will be turning our attention to weather hazards instead.

10b.pngStart by looking at the Weather Hazards PowerPoint with your child, and seeing how many your student can think of. (Hint: hazards are normally too much or too little of something - sun, wind, rain, snow, and so on.)

Next, have a look at the Weather Disaster or Not? sheet. If there are any words your student is unfamiliar with (for example, cyclone), look up the meaning using a kid-safe online search engine or a dictionary.

We will not look at drought or floods in this topic as they will be covered later in the course. We will be focusing on hurricanes, tornadoes and blizzards. Use the worksheet Severe Weather to make sure your child understands the basics of each of these hazards.

Finally, ask your student to have a go at the Weather Disasters Crossword.

Challenge Activity
