Today's Lesson

Main Activity

2a.pngDuring the last lesson we looked at how we can identify settlements on a map. But why did settlers choose these places? Ask your student to imagine that they are an early settler arriving in a strange land – what would you look for when deciding where to live?

Read through the How were early settlements chosen? PowerPoint together.

Then ask your student to use these slides to complete first the Site Advantages and Disadvantages worksheet and then the Site Factors worksheet.

Challenge Activity

2c.pngVery old settlements with a Viking, Saxon or Norman history often have names ending in certain letters, for example: ‘-by’,

‘-ton’, ‘-chester’, ‘-ham’ or ‘-don’. Can your student find out what each of these endings means? Can they find three examples of modern place names for each ending?
