Today's Lesson

Main Activity

Watch the video Map Projections and discuss it with your student to help them understand.  If you have an orange or fruit you can peel, you can show how the peel is not a neat shape once peeled.

WATCH - Map Projections (YouTube)

Now let's investigate the problem of showing a round world on a flat map in more detail. Look at the 3 map projections shown on the 'Map Projections' sheet.

Use the information to complete the Comparing Map Projections to the Globe' worksheet in as much detail as you can.  You can check your answers using the Comparing Map Projections to the Globe Answers sheet.

WATCH - Selecting Map Projections (National Geographic)

Finally, watch the short video Selecting Map Projections (1 minute).  Is there one perfect world map for everyone? Which projection is most useful for you?

Challenge Activity

Can your student write a summary of the main things they have learnt today? (Why there are different map projections and what the differences between the different projections are). If they prefer, they could ‘teach’ another family member.
