Today's Lesson
Main Activity
We have learned a lot in the last few lessons about the effects of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. Today we will look at how we can reduce the of natural hazards through 'the 3 Ps': Prediction, Prevention and Preparation.
Read pages 28-33 of the Volcanoes and Earthquakes Study Book.
Use what you have learnt to complete pages 28-33 of the Volcanoes and Earthquakes Activity Book.
Although earthquakes can be very frightening, there are things that people living in earthquake zones can do to prepare, for example, practising an earthquake drill and preparing an emergency kit. Watch the video clip on Earthquake DrillsΒ together - why not have a go yourself?
WATCH β Earthquake Drill (YouTube)
Finally, see if your student can make a list of the things that your family would need to pack in an emergency kit - everything needs to be useful and to fit in a backpack that is not too heavy to carry. Once they have made a list of at least 10 items, check it against the Emergency Kit Checklist. How many of the items did they include?
Challenge Activity
Ask your student to design a poster to help to explain earthquake drills and emergency kits to other children.
